Twins sign Jason Repko

Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune reported yesterday that the Minnesota Twins signed 29-year old OF-Jason Repko to a minor league contract.  He will head to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings where he figures to be the team’s center fielder and Denard Span “insurance policy.”  It was just last week on Wednesday that the Los Angeles Dodgers released him two months after signing him to a 1-year $500,000 contract.

For his career, Jason has hit 0.226/.297/.371 with 11 HR and 17 SB in 429 major league at bats.  Last season he hit 0.277/.329/.471 with 16 HR and 24 SB in 110 games for the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA).

Steve Fetch of our Twins site, Twinkie Talk, had this to say about the move:

"I’d be pretty surprised if Repko saw any time in the majors this year, barring a terrible injury.  I’m assuming he is a cheap backup in case Denard Span gets hurt.  This also signals that they didn’t feel Rene Tosoni was ready and didn’t want to burn a year of service on him or any of their other outfield prospects."
