Marlins Designate RHP Jose Veras For Assignment

The Florida Marlins have designated hard-throwing righty reliever Jose Veras for assignment.

They had seen enough of the former Yankees and Indians pitcher after he allowed eight runs, seven hits, and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. Veras did strike out six batters.

The righthander owns a career 4.80 ERA in 133 innings over 132 games from 2006-2010.

Veras works in the mid-90’s with his fastball, but he pitches up in the zone, which has led to an inflated homer rate (1.22 HR/9) in his major league career. He also lacks control (4.94 BB/9).

Veras has a solid high-70’s curveball that he throws around 30% of the time, but his fastball gets hit around too much for him to be anything more than a trash-time relief pitcher.

Since he’s only 29, touches 97 mph, and has the good curve, it’s possible Veras will find himself in another big league uniform soon, but he’s already worn out his welcome with three teams.
