Roster Moves (5/26): Coco Crisp and Edgar Renteria DL bound … again

facebooktwitterreddit

Published Thursday morning?  Published Thursday night?  Nope and nope.  As you can tell, I’m till working out the kinks in my schedule to get this out on a daily basis.  Extreme fatigue coupled with last night’s 9:30 pm start for our softball game* did not help matters.  My goal remains to get Roster Moves published by 9:00 am every morning Monday through Friday.  It’s good to have goals.  Right?  […]

*For those of you who care, the KC Ham Fighters came home with a victory and are 2-1 after dropping our opener.

This report will be a little stripped down, but I am tweaking the format a bit with the inclusion of some categories which I hope will make it easier to follow.  The Roster Moves for 5/27 should be following shortly.

The Disabled:

In a turn of events that surely comes as a shock to absolutely everyone who follows baseball, OF-Coco Crisp (30) is injured again.  The Oakland Athletics have placed Coco on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right intercostal muscle.  The move was made retroactive to May 23rd.  The A’s signed him to a $5.25 million 1-year contract, with a club option for 2011, on December 23rd and have received a measly 8 plate appearances in return.  I smell another buyout coming Coco’s way at the conclusion of the season.

San Francisco Giants SS-Edgar Renteria (34) is also a return customer to the 15-day disabled list.  This most recent stint is due to a strained hamstring as opposed to his first DL stint (5/7-5/22) which was thanks to a strained groin.  In the 23 games he has played in this season he’s hit 0.326/.372/.395 and has been solid in the field as well with a 4.6 UZR/150.

The Demoted/Optioned:

The New York Yankees optioned LHP-Boone Logan (25) to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA).

OF-Bryan Petersen (24) was optioned back to New Orleans (AAA) by the Florida Marlins.

The Designated:

C-Paul Hoover, who was DFA’d by the Phillies on 5/24, has been outrighted to Lehigh Valley (AAA).

Recently claimed RHP-Shane Lindsay (25) was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees.  He was claimed off waivers from the Rockies on May 14th but his career in pinstripes appears to have been short lived.

The Promoted:

Thanks to Crisp’s latest DL stint, the Oakland Athletics called up C-Landon Powell (28).  Powell’s chances at major league playing time appear to be tied to Coco’s health.  You may recall that Landon was sent down when Coco came of the DL last week.

The Signed:

RHP-Chad Gaudin (27) signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees.

The Atlanta Braves recently signed Cuban OF-Yassir Gomez (30).  If you want to read more about this move, MLB Trade Rumors has you covered, or can get you started at least.

The Others:

Cincinnati Reds placed SS-Paul Janish (27) on bereavement list so he can attend his grandmother’s funeral.  2B-Drew Sutton (26) has been called up from Louisville (AAA) to take his place for a few days.

For a quick explanation of the bereavement policy, I pulled the following from Wikipedia.

"The bereavement list may be used when a player finds it necessary to leave the team to attend to a serious illness or death in his (or his spouse’s) immediate family. A player placed on the bereavement list must miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven games. The team can use another player from its 40-man roster to replace a player on the bereavement list."
