Call-Ups: Chicago White Sox and Dayan Viciedo
By Wally Fish
Once again it is collaborative post time here on Call to the Pen. This month’s topic is September call-ups. To get the ball rolling, I posed the following question to each of our Lead Writers, “Which player do you want your team to call-up in September and why?” It is a simple question but I think you will find the responses to be very diverse.
Taking the path less traveled this month, I decided to post each team’s write-up individually instead of grouping them by league or division as we have done in the past.
Representing the Chicago White Sox and Southside Showdown is the site’s Lead Writer, Rob Sesso. Check out what he has to say after the jump.
Rob’s Take:
It’s really tough for me to pick someone for the Sox to recall when the minor league system is so depleted. Their most pressing need is bullpen arms, especially from the left side. Erick Threets was already on the major league roster, but tore his ulnar collateral ligament on Friday and will most likely require Tommy John surgery.
The Chicago White Sox should recall Dayan Viciedo when the rosters expand. Viciedo has already had a cup of coffee in the majors when he was called up after 3B Mark Teahen was put on the disabled list for his finger injury. Viciedo played an average third base in the time he was here, but his bat showed tremendous power. His plate discipline is lacking right now, but hopefully he addressed that issue when he returned to the minor leagues.
With the Sox in the midst of a playoff race, it would be good experience for the young third baseman. He can fill in at third down the stretch or be a valuable pinch hitter.
There aren’t many options to go to at this point. Rosters expand very soon, and Manny Ramirez, a valuable addition, is on his way.
Maybe Viciedo can learn a thing or two from the veteran.
