Call-Ups: Florida Marlins and Matt Dominguez

Once again it is collaborative post time here on Call to the Pen. This month’s topic is September call-ups. To get the ball rolling, I posed the following question to each of our Lead Writers, “Which player do you want your team to call-up in September and why?” It is a simple question but I think you will find the responses to be very diverse.

Taking the path less traveled this month, I decided to post each team’s write-up individually instead of grouping them by league or division as we have done in the past.

Representing the Florida Marlins and Marlin Maniac is the site’s Lead Writer, Michael Jong. Check out what he has to say after the jump.

Michael’s Take:

The interesting thing about the Marlins’ upcoming September is that many of the players who have deserved a “cup of coffee” have already arrived in the majors this season. The team’s top prospect, outfielder Mike Stanton, has been in the big leagues since midseason and is a Rookie of the Year candidate. First base/left field prospect Logan Morrison, who was having an excellent season in Triple-A New Orleans, was forced into big league action with the season-ending injury to Chris Coghlan. Cameron Maybin, who was in the majors earlier in the year, was recently promoted to fill center field with the departure of Cody Ross via waivers. Combine that with the dearth of pitching prospects the Marlins have in the minors, and the options for Septermber callups are slim to none.

The one name who should get a look late this year is third base prospect Matt Dominguez. Dominiguez has had another mediocre year in Double-A Jacksonville, batting just 0.251/.333/.413 for the season. However, this does represent an improvement over his poor showing late in the year for Jacksonville in 2009. In addition, while the defensive numbers have not been kind on Dominguez’ glove, he has always been known as a major-league ready defender even at the age of 20. However, perhaps the biggest reason for Dominguez to receive a look is that the Marlins do not have much in the way of better options. The curent Marlins starter at third base is the immortal Wes Helms, who does not project to be very useful at the plate (.307 projected wOBA) and is unlikely to be much better than Dominguez on defense, if at all. The Marlins would not lose much by going to their third baseman of the future for a month over another veteran who would perform comparably.
