Rule 5 Reports: Blue Jays INF Brad Emaus Selected by Mets

A hitter!

That’s right; the tenth pick of the Rule 5 Draft marked the first non-pitcher selection since the first pick, Josh Rodriguez. And like Rodriguez, Mets selection Brad Emaus is a surprisingly powerful infielder.

Emaus walks a lot. He garnered a free pass in over 18% of his Double-A plate appearances this season (19/31 K/BB in 38 games!) and fell only to 13.7% in Triple-A. He slugged .495 in Triple-A as well (hitter’s haven alert!) while posting an even 50/50 K/BB.

So, he’s going to help offensively, and while Emaus is not a stellar defender, he can help out at a variety of positions. That made him one of the most talked-about potential Rule 5 selections, up there with Elvin Ramirez and Aneury Rodriguez.

It’s a no-brainer that Emaus is a good selection, as he can definitely help a team right now in a variety of ways. Oddly enough, the two best selections (in my opinion) in the first ten were by the Astros and Mets, of all teams. Weird, huh?
