Odd Ball: Imposters and Fowl Balls

Apparently the strangeness that surrounds a Friday the 13th could not be contained to simply one day.  The spillover of today’s superstitious date was felt yesterday in three MLB stadiums.

The odd cases involved a super fan, some local wildlife, and a bad wig.

During yesterday’s matchup against the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners, each team’s defense came through with some solid plays in support of their pitching.  This defensive intensity carried over into the stands for one gentleman.

One fan was able to catch not one, not even two, but three foul balls during last night’s game at Camden Yards.  Two of the balls came from a single at bat.  The complete sequence can be seen here.

In the famous words of O’s former PA announcer Rex Barney, “Give that fan a contract”.

Thursday’s second notable odd event took place in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Pirates and LA Dodgers faced a rain delay in the top of the third inning of last night’s contest.  Several ducks figured that the tarped field would make for a great play place and decided to join the grounds crew.

These friendly fowl made appearances the night before and had to be scurried off the field.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “ducks on the pond”.

Finally there was an impersonation attempted yesterday in Chicago.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has not joined the club on their most recent road trip.  The coach is dealing with his bout of shingles from his home in St. Louis.

Knowing this, fans must have been shocked Thursday at Wrigley Field when they saw a man appearing to be La Russa walk out of the opponent’s dugout.  The imposter was soon discovered to be Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Lohse.
