The San Francisco Giants have placed first baseman Brandon Belt on their 15 day disabled list.  The 23 year old has been diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his wrist.

Belt was hit by Cardinals pitcher Trever Miller during Tuesday night’s contest.  He was removed for a pinch hitter in the 9th, but sounded optimistic after the game.

“It got me pretty good,” Belt said. “I’m a little stiff but we took a few X-rays and everything looked pretty good. Hopefully I’ll get back out here as soon as possible.”

It turns out that everything is not good and as soon as possible will be at least 15 days.

Belt started the season with the Giants, but has struggled to a tune of .211/.281/.328.

A 5th round pick in 2009, Belt moved quickly through San Fran’s system.  He climbed from high A all the way to AAA in his first year and then broke camp with the big league club this spring.

After his early season struggles, Belt was then sent back to the minors.  He’s destroyed AAA pitching in 2011, registering an impressive .994 OPS and 21 RBIs in 31 games.

To take Belt’s roster spot, San Francisco has called up former first round pick Conor Gillaspie.  The 23 year old debuted with the Giants back in 2008, but has remained in the minors since.  He’s maintained a line of .284/.350/.402 during his minor league career.
