Hundley Returns for Pads

Nick Hundley returns to action for the San Diego Padres tonight.  He made the club’s lineup for today’s contest against the Rockies.

The 27 year old has been sidelined since May 5th when he went to the disabled list with a strained oblique.  Hundley injured his side the day before taking a swing in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Though Hundley only managed a batting average of .263 before his injury, that mark is good enough for third best on the Padres.

San Diego has been arguably the worst offensive club in the league this season.  The club checks in last in runs scored, OBP and slugging % heading into Thursday’s contest.

The Padres are quick to return Hundley to their lineup because they were unable to find a competitive replacement in his absence.  Rob Johnson and Kyle Phillips have shared starts as backstop, with Johnson making the majority of appearances.

He was obviously not back there for his batting prowess.  Johnson has only produced an OPS of .468 on the year, his average sitting at a meager .180.  Phillips by comparison is a superstar, but not really.  While his average is over the Mendoza Line, it’s not much better (.233).

Hundley and the Friars finish up a 3 game set against the Rockies tonight in San Diego.
