Nats Gorzelanny Nearing Return

MASNsports.com reports that Nationals pitcher Tom Gorzelanny will make a rehab start Monday before hopefully rejoining the big league club later next week.

The 28 year old hit Washington’s disabled list in late May due to elbow inflammation.  The left hander experienced pain during a side session after his May 23rd start and was shut down by the team several days later.

Washington was originally hoping Gorzelanny would be able to return June 8th, the day he became eligible to come off of the team’s DL.  However, the Nationals want him to face live action before bringing him back to the bigs.

"“I just hear he feels better,” Riggleman said. “I don’t know exactly what that means. I think pitching in a ballgame will be a real test, to get multiple innings. The bullpen stuff is one thing, but when the adrenaline’s flowing, hitters are up there and the umpire’s back there, you get a little more of a test for how it’s feeling.”"

Yuniesky Maya has replaced Gorzelanny in the Nats rotation and will make another start for the club Tuesday.  The Cuban native didn’t make it out of the 5th inning in his first two appearances this season, but came back Wednesday night to give the Nationals 6 innings of 1 run ball.
