Barajas to DL with Sprained Ankle
By Editorial Staff
Before yesterday’s finale against the Astros, the LA Dodgers placed catcher Rod Barajas on the disabled list with a right ankle sprain. Barajas injured the ankle Saturday night when he was going after a wild pitch.
Initially the team was worried the ankle was severely damaged. However, X rays came back negative and now the Dodgers are hoping to have their catcher back after the minimum requirement of 15 days.
While the backstop’s line wasn’t overly impressive, Barajas was second on the team with 8 home runs.
LA has called up Triple-A catcher A.J. Ellis to take Barajas’ open roster spot. The 30 year old has maintained a line of .307/.482/.426 in 33 minor league games this season.
With Barajas on the DL, the Dodgers will turn to backup Dioner Navarro as their everyday catcher. The former All-Star has been terrible over the past 3 seasons, as he only managed an OPS of .528 last year. This season, Navarro’s average has generally been below the Mendoza Line.
None of this mattered yesterday, as the 27 year old stepped up big time for his club. Navarro went 2-3 with a home run, the only RBI in 1-0 Dodgers victory over the Astros. Sadly enough this actually raised his average to .175.
