Jeter Swinging; Still Waiting to Run

Derek Jeter’s rehab program is off to a jogging start, but the question still remains when the player will begin really testing his sore calf.  Jeter is hoping to start a running routine today or tomorrow to see where his injury stands.

"“You’ve got to run. Once you start running, then we’ll have a better sense,” said Jeter, who’s been on the DL since June 13 with a strained right calf. “If it was up to me I’d be playing now, but you have to be smart.”"

Jeter’s been jogging lightly for the past two days and was able to take some swings Sunday.  The 37 year old took 35 cuts during a soft toss exercise and another 39 off of a tee.

Because he only started jogging Saturday and hasn’t done any running yet, it’s unlikely that the Yankees’ captain rejoins the team this Wednesday, the first day he is eligible to return from the DL.

Originally that was Jeter’s goal, but last week the team didn’t sound nearly as positive regarding the situation.  New York noted that with the time their short stop has missed, Jeter could be heading to the minors to regain his timing before he’s back with the club.
