The Nationals announced that utility man Jerry Hairston is heading to the disabled list with a broken bone in his right wrist.

The break occurred Wednesday evening during a contest against the Angels.  LA starter Dan Haren nailed Hairston on the right hand in the 5th inning.  Hairston had to the leave the game and has been out since.

Washington’s medical staff has estimated the timeframe for recovery to take two to four weeks, but Hairston has other plans.

"“Knowing what I can and can’t do, I think I’d be hurting the team if I’d be out there playing,” said Hairston. “The main thing is just getting healthy, hopefully in two weeks. It broke in a good area to heal pretty quick.”"

While the 35 year old hasn’t been spectacular at the plate this year for the Nationals (.260/.335/.353), he has been able to live up to his utility man title, playing in center and left field as well as second and third base in 2011.

Washington replaced Hairston on their roster by reinstating Rick Ankiel.  Ankiel had been on the DL since the middle of June with a strained rib cage.
