Jayson Nix Designated for Assignment

After their Saturday matinee against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Blue Jays designated third baseman Jayson Nix for assignment.

Nix was acquired from the Cleveland Indians this March for cash considerations.  The 28 year old was used primarily at third base by the Jays this year.

On the year, Nix has struggled immensely at the plate.  After a so-so beginning of April, Nix landed on the disabled list with a bruised left shin.  He returned for Toronto in the middle of May, but hasn’t been able to find himself at the plate since.  Nix only managed batting averages of .118 and .140 in May and June while producing a line of .169/.245/.309 in 46 games with the Blue Jays.

To replace Nix on their roster, Toronto recalled Mike McCoy.  The 30 year old was used as a utility man earlier in the year by the club, covering short, second and third as well as center and right field.  McCoy put up a .638 OPS over his 35 games with the Jays this season.
