Padres Send Clayton Richard to DL; Activate Luke Gregerson

The Padres have placed starting pitcher Clayton Richard on the disabled list with a strained shoulder.

San Diego announced the roster move a day after Richard was pulled from his start against the San Francisco Giants.  The 27 year old threw only 76 pitches over 5 shutout innings before he was removed.

"“It wasn’t one pitch. … Nothing [specific] happened,” Richard said. “It was a little tough in the fifth inning getting loose. We wanted to take care of it. We’ll shut it down and let the inflammation out.”"

Richard and the Padres hope that one missed start and the All-Star break will be enough to get the starter’s shoulder back to good.  On the season, Richard has turned in an ERA of 3.88 over 18 starts.

San Diego’s manager Bud Black has not confirmed who will start in Richard’s place, but the candidates appear to be Anthony Bass, Wade LeBlanc and Aaron Harang who is returning from injury.

To replace Richard’s spot on the roster, the Padres have activated reliever Luke Gregerson from the disabled list.  The right hander has been out since the beginning of June with an injured oblique.

On the season Gregerson has been excellent out of the pen for the Pads.  The 27 year old has held an ERA of 2.63 to go along with his 1.32 WHIP over 27.1 innings.

Gregerson was used as a late inning guy, primarily in the 7th, to bridge the gap from starters to fellow relievers Mike Adams and Heath Bell.
