Brandon Webb’s Season Over
By Editorial Staff
Another low risk-high reward move has gone awry.
A recent MRI showed some more damage in Brandon Webb’s rotator cuff and it now appears that the starter won’t be pitching for the Rangers this season.
Webb was scratched from his last rehab start after experiencing pain in his shoulder. He is left with a few options after the MRI, one of those being surgery.
Texas signed Webb to a one year $3 million deal this offseason that had the potential to reach a total of $8 million based on incentives.
“It’s disappointing from the standpoint that we knew when we signed him this was a risk-reward deal,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “We knew that he had some shoulder history, but thought he was at a point he could push through it and get over the hump and unfortunately, really for no lack of effort or work, it’s just not working out.”
Webb was never able to show much improvement while on rehab assignment this season. The right hander made 4 starts with the Rangers’ Double-A affiliate and held an ERA of 9.75 over his 12 innings of work. Webb never regained his velocity or found his command on the mound.
The 33 year old was last on the mound for the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day contest of 2009.
