David Wright Nearing Return

As the All-Star break approaches and many players are preparing for time off, David Wright is getting ready to instead increase his work load.  According to the Mets, Wright is progressing very well in his rehab and could begin a minor league assignment next week.

Wright has been out since the middle of May after sustaining a stress fracture in his lower back.  The injury occurred when right tried to place a diving tag on Astros’ outfielder Carlos Lee.

Mets’ manager Terry Collins recently shared with reporters that Wright is running at near full speed and will begin taking part in base running and sliding drills Monday.  The 28 year old has already been participating in fielding drills and batting practice.

After Wright shows he’s back to 100% on the base paths, he could jump right into a rehab stint in the minors.  New York would be looking for their 5 time All-Star to regain his comfort and timing at the plate before activating him.

"“We’ll see how he’s doing. Certainly a lot of it will be dictated in how he’s playing, too. We just have to wait and see,” Collins said, adding that he didn’t think Wright would need all 20 of his allotted days on rehab. “He’ll have a say in that. If he tells me, ‘Look, I’m not seeing the ball good, I’m not feeling good at the plate,’ that’ll all have a say, too, on whether or not we activate him.”"

New York will be sending advisors to follow Wright on his rehab assignment and see how the third baseman is progressing.  They will not necessarily be depending on the numbers Wright is putting up, but instead how he looks and feels at the plate and in the field.  Best case scenario, the Mets would like to have Wright back in their lineup by July 22nd.
