Denard Span took another large step towards returning to the Twins as the outfielder has been cleared to begin his minor league rehab assignment.

No dates have been announced and Span isn’t sure which affiliate he will join, but the news was nonetheless positive for Minnesota.

Span has been out since June 6th after he sustained a mild concussion.  The center fielder collided with Royals’ catcher Brayan Pena as he was sliding into home plate during a June 3rd contest.  Even though Span was able to suit up on the 6th, he complained of light-headedness during that game and was quickly put on the disabled list.

Span was able to resume baseball related activities in late June, but until recently was not deemed ready for a minor league assignment.

Before his injury, Span was one of the Twins’ most productive hitters. In 2011, Span only failed to reach base safely in 7 of the 55 games he started this season.  The 27 year old produced a .294 batting average with 14 extra base hits for the Twins this year.
