Jose Bautista Day-to-Day After Injuring Ankle

Blue Jays fans are collectively holding their breath this morning as they await news on slugger Jose Bautista.

Bautista left last night’s blowout win against the New York Yankees in the 4th inning after twisting his ankle.  The 30 year old sustained the injury sliding into third base.

The two time All-Star collapsed after awkwardly hitting the bag last night.  He spent some time on the ground writhing in pain, but was able to gingerly walk off the field.

Bautista was immediately taken for X-rays which returned negative.  Though the team is encouraged that there is no bone damage involved, they are still likely to continue testing early Friday to discern the severity of Bautista’s injury.  As of now Toronto has him listed as day-to-day.

Proving that his 2010 season was not simply a flash in the pan, Bautista has continued his torrid play this year.  He leads the league in home runs, carrying a whopping 31 dingers into the All-Star break.  He also is first in the bigs in free passes (75) and second in runs scored (74).

Bautista is head and shoulders above the rest of the league in slugging percentage (.701) and OPS (1.171).  The next closest player in each category is Lance Berkman, and he’s nearly 100 points behind in SLG and the OPS gap is even greater.
