The Rangers have acquired another one of the league’s top setup men today, bringing in Mike Adams from the Padres for prospects Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland.

Adams has posted sub 1.80 ERA’s over the past 3 seasons for the Pads as the club’s 8th inning guy.  On the year the 33 year old has posted a miniscule ERA (1.13) and WHIP (0.73).  The right hander has struck out 49 batters in his 48 innings of work.

In his 7 major league seasons, Adams has a career ERA of 2.11, 1.01 WHIP and a strike out rate of 9.3 per 9.

In return for their elite reliever, the Padres received two of the Rangers top minor league arms.  Erlin is the big name of the deal, as he’s currently ranked as a top 35 prospect by Baseball America.  The 20 year old has posted a 3.34 ERA with 123 strike outs in 121.1 innings between Single and Double-A.

While he wasn’t very highly regarded entering 2011, Wieland has greatly increased his stock this season.  The 21 year old right hander has maintained a sub 2 earned run average this year while also pitching between Single and Double-A.  Wieland’s WHIP is 0.987 on the season and he’s held a ridiculous SO/BB ratio of 8.80.
