Carlos Carrasco Placed on Disabled List

Cleveland pitcher Carlos Carrasco has been placed on the 15 day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.  The same injury sidelined the Indians’ starter for 2 weeks earlier in the season.

Carrasco started last Wednesday’s game for the Tribe when he held the Red Sox to 2 earned runs over 7 innings.  It was his best start since in a while, as Carrasco faced a rocky July in which he averaged a 9.13 ERA on the month.

After a tough start to the 2011 season, Carrasco rebounded for a solid month of June when he went 4-2 with a 1.90 ERA.  On the year Carrasco is 8-9 over 21 starts with a 1.36 WHIP and 4.55 ERA.

For now the Indians have replaced Carrasco with third baseman Jack Hannahan who had been on paternity leave.  The next time a 5th starter will be needed is this upcoming Saturday, and Cleveland will likely remove one of their additional position players to make room for a pitcher.

Shelley Duncan and Austin Kearns are the two candidates to be taken off the roster, while left hander David Huff would appear the starter set to replace Carrasco this weekend.

Huff has started 3 games for the Indians this season and has only allowed a single earned run over his 17.2 innings of work.  The 26 year old has spent most of his time at Triple-A in 2011, where he’s posted an ERA of 3.86 over 17 starts.
