Braves Activate Brian McCann; Lose Tommy Hanson

Today the Braves got back their best bat while losing one of their top arms.  Atlanta placed right hander Tommy Hanson on the disabled list and filled his roster spot by activating catcher Brian McCann.

Hanson is once again headed to the DL with tendinitis, the same issue that sidelined him in June.  The 24 year old has posted an ERA of 3.60 over his 22 starts for the club, striking out 142 in 130 innings.

After missing 2 weeks in June, Hanson returned with three solid starts prior to the All-Star break.  But since, Hanson has struggled as he’s allowed 24 earned runs over his last 26.2 innings of work.  His last outing was his worst, as he was shelled for 7 runs last Saturday by the Mets in only 3.1 innings.

Atlanta hasn’t named who will take over Hanson’s spot in the rotation with his next turn coming Tuesday against the Giants.

McCann has been out since late July with a strained left oblique.  Before his injury, the backstop was the Braves top offensive contributor.  Still leading the team in OBP (.375) and batting average (.306), McCann is second on the Braves with 18 home runs and third in RBI’s (55).
