A.J. Pierzysnki to DL with Fractured Wrist
By Editorial Staff
White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is heading to the disabled list for the first time in his 14 year career. Chicago replaced Pierzynski, who is dealing with a fractured left wrist, on their roster with Triple-A catcher Donny Lucy.
Pierzynski sustained the injury Friday when he was hit on the hand by a pitch thrown by Royals’ starter Bruce Chen. The backstop eventually left the game and hasn’t returned to action since.
In the midst of a red hot August before the injury, Pierzynski has been solid this year for the Chi Sox. On the season the 34 year old has hit at a clip of .296/.338/.412 with 6 home runs and 39 RBI’s.
With Pierzynski landing on the DL, Chicago will be turning to youngster Tyler Flowers to take over everyday catching duties. Flowers was called up in the middle of July, but has only made 8 appearances as Pierzynski’s backup. He’s fared well in his few chances and Chicago will now get a opportunity to take a better look at him.
Flowers posted impressive numbers as he made his way through the minors, totaling a career line of .275/.391/.484.
