Alex Rodriguez Still Hoping for Weekend Return

Alex Rodriguez is still aiming to rejoin the Yankees this weekend, but things are not nearly as clear as they seemed to be earlier in the week.

Manager Joe Girardi told the media that they’re more likely to see Rodriguez back in the lineup Sunday, also hinting that the slugger’s return could be pushed back until Tuesday or beyond.

"“I would probably lean against doing it [Saturday] because he’s going to have that workout,” said Girardi. “[It could be] Sunday or Tuesday, or whenever he’s ready.”"

Several dates have been thrown out and passed by regarding Rodriguez’s return.  Originally New York was hoping to have A-Rod back last Monday.  That was then pushed back until the start of the Yankees weekend series versus the Twins.

But following his final Minor League rehab game Wednesday, Rodriguez admitted that he felt tentative and hesitant.  He’s since made it back with the Yankees, but hasn’t seen any live action.  Instead he is continuing to work out with New York’s training staff.

Rodriguez was encouraged by his latest workout and sounds like he’s lost some of that uncertainty regarding his knee.

"“We’re definitely getting close. Today was very encouraging,” Rodriguez said. “I think everything was better. … The biggest thing today was going first to third. I thought I did much better today than yesterday, and just recovery, overall.”"

New York is holding onto their slim .5 game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East, and could certainly use a healthy Rodriguez back in the middle of their lineup.

A-Rod sounds just as ready to get back to it and do his part to help the Yankees during their run at the playoffs.

"“I’m hungry, I want to get back out there,” Rodriguez said. “These guys, the way they’re playing, it’s inspiring. For me, the idea is to make sure that I’m ready to go, hit the ground running, and never look back and just have a great next two months.”"
