Cliff Lee’s Hot Streak Continues as Phillies Rout Mets

Cliff Lee continued his torrid month of August last night, holding the Mets scoreless over 7 innings in the Phillies 10-0 victory.

Philadelphia gave Lee plenty of cushion early on.  Wilson Valdez, who was standing in for the injured Jimmy Rollins at short, got things started with an RBI single in the 2nd.  Lee himself extended the inning with his 12th hit of the year before Shane Victorino’s triple gave the Phils a 3-0 lead.

It was all the offensive support Lee would need on a night where he only allowed a pair of Mets’ batter to reach second base.  Lee gave up 3 hits while striking out 7 before handing the ball over to his pen.  David Herndon entered and preserved the shutout with two innings of scoreless work.

With the win, Lee improved his record to 14-7 and lowered his ERA to 2.71.

It’s been a tale of three months for Lee. The guy was nearly unhittable in June, posting a miniscule 0.21 ERA over his 5 starts.  He then looked like an entirely new pitcher in July, holding a monthly ERA of 4.91 while allowing 39 hits in his 33 innings pitched.

Lee now looks to be back on track in August.  Over his 4 starts this month, Lee’s combined to surrender only 2 runs and 17 hits over 31 innings.  Stemming back to his last game of July, Lee’s won his last 5 starts.
