Just days after Michael Brantley hit the disabled list with a wrist problem, the Cleveland Indians announced they will be without their outfielder for the remainder of the year.  To replace Brantley on their roster, Cleveland called up outfielder Jerad Head.

Brantley was transferred to the Indians 60 day DL yesterday after being diagnosed with a broken bone in his right hand.  The injury will require surgery, and it will likely sideline Brantley 6 to 9 weeks.

Originally after placing Brantley on the disabled list, Cleveland was hoping to give him a few days off before beginning a rehab process.  But the team soon realized that Brantley’s injury was worse than expected.

Brantley dealt with discomfort in his wrist since the beginning of August.  Brantley missed 8 games this month, but tried to play through the pain in order to avoid a trip to the DL.

Looking back, the wrist definitely seems to have impacted Brantley’s production.  After batting .294 in July, Brantley was only able to put up a line of .211/.237/.386 in August.

Total, Brantley has hit .266/.318/.384 with 35 extra base hits, 46 RBI’s and 63 runs scored this year for the Tribe.

The 28 year old Head made his Major League debut for the Indians Sunday, going 1-3 while taking over for Brantley in left field.  Over his 114 games in Triple-A this season, Head has managed an OPS of .864 with 24 home runs, 28 doubles and 70 RBI’s.
