Carlos Gomez Returning to Brewers Thursday

After completing his 4th and final rehab game, Carlos Gomez is set to rejoin the Milwaukee Brewers when rosters expand Thursday.  Gomez has been out since July 20th with a broken collarbone.

During the second of a three game set against the Diamondbacks in late July, Gomez and the Brewers found themselves in a tight match between playoff hopefuls.  In the bottom of the fourth inning with the Crew leading 1-0 and Arizona batting, a ball was hit softly to left center.  Gomez moved in and to his right, diving to make the spectacular grab.

While the catch likely saved a run, Milwaukee took a serious hit as Gomez broke his collarbone.

Soon after sustaining the injury, Gomez underwent surgery to repair the break.  He’s since rehabbed and began his Minor League assignment this past week.

Gomez hadn’t exactly been lighting up the stats sheet (.220/.270/.378) before hitting the disabled list, but he will definitely be a valuable addition to the Brewers as they approach the postseason.

This year Milwaukee was using Gomez in a platoon with Nyjer Morgan with Gomez facing lefties.  He fared quite well; over his 78 at bats against south paws Gomez managed an OPS of .801 with 10 extra base hits.

Gomez is also a solid defensive center fielder, as before his injury he had the third best UZR/150 among outfielders, and a menace on the base paths (15 steals in 16 attempts).
