Matt Holliday Shut Down Until Next Week

Matt Holliday has been shut down by the St. Louis Cardinals for the final four games of their East Coast road trip.  Holliday is dealing with an inflamed tendon in his right middle finger.

Holliday sustained the injury during Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  In the 9th inning of that contest, Holliday experienced pain while taking a few practice cuts and had to be removed.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that Holliday will have to rest the hand for 4 to 5 days before being reevaluated next week.  At that point the club should have a better idea of what Holliday is dealing with and how long his recovery period will be.

This season Holliday has once again been a force in the heart of the Cardinals order.  On the year, Holliday’s hit at a clip of .295/.388/.528 with 22 home runs, 35 doubles and 74 RBI’s.

With only 13 games remaining, each contest is critical for the Cardinals who currently find themselves 4.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card race.  St. Louis has an off day Thursday and then will begin a four game set in Philadelphia.
