Robinson Cano Hoping to Play Friday

Robinson Cano and the New York Yankees received a bit of a scare Wednesday night during their marathon match against the Seattle Mariners.

In the 12th inning of that contest, Cano was hit by a pitch thrown by Mariners reliever Steve Delabar.  The ball connected with Cano’s right foot, and the second baseman was in obvious pain.

While he admitted he was a little worried immediately following the pitch, Cano said that he knew his foot wasn’t broken.

Cano’s diagnosis turned out to be correct.  X-rays taken after the Mariners walked off with the win in the bottom of the 12th came back negative.

If it weren’t for the Yankees timely off day Thursday, Cano may have been forced to miss a game.  As it stands, he said that he will be back in the lineup tonight when New York begins its weekend series with the Blue Jays.

The loss of Cano would have been a hard pill to swallow for a Yankees club that is preparing for the postseason.  Cano currently leads the club in hits (177) and doubles (43).  On the year, Cano has put up a line of .305/.347/.534 with 26 home runs and 111 RBI’s.
