Chone Figgins Done for the Year

Another disappointing season in Seattle has come to an end for Chone Figgins.  The Mariners have announced that they are shutting Figgins down for the remainder of the year.

Figgins has been out since the beginning of August, missing the last month and a half of action due to a hip flexor injury.

Seattle activated Figgins back on the 3rd of September, but the third baseman wasn’t able to return for the Mariners.  Figgins tested the hip once more this weekend, but it still wasn’t giving him a positive response.  That being the case, the Mariners decided to shut him down for the rest of the year.

Figgins will remain in Seattle as his club begins their 7 game road trip today.  While resting over the final two weeks of the season, Figgins will also undergo tests to try and determine the extent of his injury and what the best course of action is regarding his rehab.

The Mariners snatched Figgins away from the Angels after the 2009 season, signing him to a 4 year $36 million deal.  The move hasn’t paid off for Seattle.

While he only hit .259/.340/.306 last year, at least Figgins played in 161 games for the Mariners.  This year, Figgins only managed to suit up for 81 contests, and his numbers are way down from 2010.  Figgins wraps up the season with a disgusting line of .188/.241/.243.  His measly .484 OPS checks in as the lowest mark in the Majors posted by a player with at least 300 plate appearances.

What might be causing residents of the Emerald City to lay awake at night?  The Mariners still owe Figgins $18 million over the next two seasons.
