Brett Lawrie Shut Down with Fractured Finger
By Editorial Staff
Brett Lawrie’s season came to an abrupt end yesterday. The Toronto Blue Jays announced that Lawrie fractured his right middle finger Wednesday and would be shut down for the remainder of the year.
Lawrie sustained the injury prior to Wednesday’s game against the LA Angels. During fielding drills, Lawrie had a ground ball hit his throwing hand after taking an awkward hop. X-rays later revealed a non-displaced fracture, leading the Blue Jays to cut short Lawrie’s first Major League season.
The injury is expected to sideline Lawrie 4 to 6 weeks. In this way the timing couldn’t have been much better for Lawrie, as players generally rest and recoup for the first month and a half of the offseason anyway.
Lawrie, who missed a significant chunk of time earlier in the year with a broken hand, was caught off guard by the X-ray results. When the ball originally caught him on the hand, Lawrie didn’t think much of it. Expecting to suit up last night and finish the remainder of the year with the Blue Jays, Lawrie will instead get a jumpstart on his offseason.
Entering the year ranked 40th on Baseball America’s top prospect list, Lawrie made his Major League debut on the 5th of August. Since then, Lawrie has more than held his own. The 21 year old posted an impressive line of .326/.381/.674 in August and finishes the season with an overall mark of .293/.373/.580.
