Justin Upton Day-to-Day Following Beaning
By Editorial Staff
The Arizona Diamondbacks received quite the scare yesterday, as outfielder Justin Upton took a Tim Lincecum fastball off the brim of his helmet. Original reports were positive, but the Diamondbacks are playing things safe, listing Upton as day-to-day.
In the bottom of the first inning, a fastball got away from Lincecum. The pitch sailed up and in, glancing off the bill of Upton’s batting helmet.
Upton went straight down, but rose to his knees and ultimately back to his feet rather quickly. Coaches and training staff met Upton at the plate, and the All-Star was allowed to remain in the game.
Upton didn’t appear to feel any immediate effects from the beaning. Miguel Montero followed Upton to the plate and sent a double to right centerfield, allowing the 24-year-old to score from first.
But the Diamondbacks removed Upton before the top of the second. Arizona lifted him for precautionary reasons as Upton was dealing with nausea after rounding the bases in the first.
Following his removal, Upton passed all of the tests Arizona put him through and they expect the incident to be a non-factor moving forward. Still, the club is putting Upton through an ImPACT neurological test today to confirm everything is as it should be.
This is all great news for Diamondbacks fans, as Upton has been an integral part to the club’s 2011 success. The right fielder has hit at a clip of .291/.372/.533 with 31 home runs, 39 doubles, 105 runs scored and 88 RBI’s.
