Delmon Young Kept Off Tigers ALCS Roster

Delmon Young has been kept off of the Detroit Tigers ALCS roster.  The club made the announcement before Saturday night’s series opener against the Texas Rangers.  Young, who had to exit Thursday’s deciding game five against the New York Yankees, is hampered by a strained left oblique muscle.

Young was forced to leave the ALDS finale the other night after injuring his side while batting in the top of the 7th inning.  After popping out to second baseman Robinson Cano, Young did not take the field in the bottom frame.

Friday, Young was checked out by a team physician.  Detroit became confident that Young would be able to join the team during their second round series, but things changed earlier today.  Tigers manager Jim Leyland admitted that Young’s oblique had stiffened up and that “it killed him when he raised his arm”.

With the move now official, Young will not be able to suit up for the Tigers during their championship series with the Rangers.  Detroit replaced Young on their roster with infielder Danny Worth.

The Tigers could have carried Young through the ALCS.  But, if they would have had to replace him in the middle of the second round he would become ineligible to play in the World Series.

Young was a big part of the Tigers first round success.  Going 6-19 overall during the series, Young belted three home runs and finished the ALDS with an OPS of 1.170.
