Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher Have 2012 Options Exercised

Last night, the New York Yankees announced that they have exercised Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher’s 2012 options.  In doing so, the Yankees have agreed to pay Swisher $10.25 million next year while dishing out $14 million to Cano.

This move had been expected by most, with Cano being a no-doubt decision.  The 29-year-old was once again one of the top second basemen in the league.  Cano led the Majors in doubles (46), RBI’s (118), slugging percentage (.533) and OPS (.882) among all second basemen.  Cano finished the season with a line of .302/.349/.533 with the second most extra base hits (81) in the Majors .

While it also seemed to be a no-brainer for the Yankees, some were wondering if the club should extend another contract to Swisher.  By his standards, Swisher had a down year in some statistical categories, batting only .260 and watching his slugging drop to .449.  Still, Swisher got on base at a clip (.374) above his career average and finished the year with 23 home runs and 30 doubles.  Swisher’s 2011 batting line resulted in an OPS (.822) only slightly below his career average (.826).

Beyond their prowess at the plate, Cano and Swisher have shown an ability to stay healthy for the Yankees.  Cano has averaged nearly 160 games played since 2007, while Swisher has suited up for 150 contests in each of his three years with the Yankees.
