Frank McCourt, MLB to Sell Dodgers

Dodgers’ owner Frank McCourt has finally relented, announcing last night that he is now willing to sell the franchise.  In a letter to Dodgers’ employees, McCourt noted that he feels selling the team “is in the best interests of our organization, our loyal fans and the community at large”.

Last night, Major League Baseball and the Dodgers released a joint statement.  In it, MLB said that McCourt has agreed “to a court-supervised process to sell the team”.  The ‘process’ is apparently designed to “realize maximum value” for the Dodgers and McCourt alike.

At this point, there is no timeframe set up for the sale of the Dodgers.  With free agents set to hit the open market later this week, it’s unknown how the decision will impact LA’s offseason plans.

People began to see the light at the end of this two-year episode last month, when Frank and Jamie McCourt reached a divorce settlement.  In the agreement, it was determined that Frank was indeed the sole owner of the Dodgers.

Early estimates have the Dodgers being worth over $1 billion.  This sale price would include the team itself, Dodger Stadium and also the club’s media rights.  Mark Cuban’s name has been floated as a potential buyer, but the owner of the Dallas Mavericks apparently balked at the current asking price.
