2012 MLB Free Agents: Albert Pujols to Meet with Marlins

Already having met with one of the largest names on the free agent market, the Miami Marlins are reportedly set to sit down with another.  According to Matthew Leach of MLB.com, free agent first baseman Albert Pujols is scheduled to meet with the Marlins in the next few days, possibly as soon as tomorrow.

Wednesday, Jose Reyes and the Marlins dined on stone crabs in Miami.  Yesterday, several Marlins’ officials traveled to the Dominican to watch Yoennis Cespedes complete a private workout.

Now it appears the Marlins may be in on the hottest free agent commodity of them all.  An industry source told Leach that Pujols is set to sit down with the Marlins in the next few days.  With the move to Miami, the new stadium and the expected payroll increase, the Marlins continue to be the most aggressive club early in the offseason.

My first thought was, don’t the Marlins already have a pretty decent first baseman?  Of course everyone is going to pale in comparison to the best hitter in the game, but Gaby Sanchez is no slouch.  He’s hit 19 home runs over the past two seasons while driving in at least 78 RBI’s.

Even so, the Marlins should be extremely willing to move the 28-year-old to make room for the future Hall of Famer.  While Pujols is expected to re-sign with the Cardinals, the longer it takes him to ink a deal the more and more likely it seems he could leave St. Louis.
