2011 MLB Trade Rumors: Tigers Interested in Maicer Izturis

facebooktwitterreddit

Two weeks ago the Detroit Tigers were linked to Atlanta Braves infielder Martin Prado.  Detroit is looking for support at several infield positions as well as atop their batting order.  Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports is reporting that the Tigers have added another infielder to their wish list.  Morosi hears that the Tigers have interest in trading for Angels infielder Maicer Izturis.

Morosi reports that the Tigers are looking for upgrades at second and third base.  Izturis makes a lot of sense as he played both positions as well as shortstop last season for the Angels.  Also, Izturis has spent time in LA’s leadoff spot, another area the Tigers are looking to bolster.

Beyond his defensive flexibility, Izturis has shown an ability to hold his own at the plate.  Last year the 31-year-old hit .276/.334/.388 with 35 doubles and 51 runs scored.  Izturis owns a career batting average and on base percentage of .275 and .339.

Morosi says Izturis will not be a starter if he remains in LA next season.  The Angels are currently looking for an upgrade at the hot corner and have expressed interest in free agent third baseman Aramis RamirezHowie Kendrick will be the everyday man at second while Erick Aybar will continue to cover short for the Angels.  This would make Izturis a $3.8 million utility player if the Angels decide to retain him.
