2012 MLB Free Agents: Angels Sign Albert Pujols

In a ridiculous turn of events it is now being reported that the Los Angeles Angels have signed top free agent first baseman Albert Pujols.  The ten-year deal is said to be worth between $250 and $260 million and includes a full no-trade clause.

Early this morning, I ran through the latest Albert Pujols rumors.  If you read through them, no where will you find a rumor or prediction stating that Pujols was expected to sign today, much less sign with the Angels.

After yesterday’s Pujols-frenzy, most believed that there was no chance of the slugger signing before the Winter Meetings ended.  While the Angels were one of clubs left in the Pujols sweepstakes, the Cardinals seemed to be the clear-cut favorite to re-sign him.

This morning MLB fans and analysts were expecting an announcement that the Angels would be signing a top free agent, only his name was expected to be C.J. Wilson.  Instead, it appears that LA has snagged the largest free agent of them all.  Even after the Pujols signing, it’s being reported that the Angels still want to add Wilson this winter.

The Pujols development just shows that you never know what can happen this time of year.
