2011 MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Willing To Deal Anyone

facebooktwitterreddit

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that, for the right price, just about any player on the Mets roster is available.  Mets general manager Sandy Alderson discussed trading young players such as Ike Davis, Jonathon Niese and Bobby Parnell during this week’s Winter Meetings.

At this point, the only Mets player that Puma sees as possibly being untouchable is third baseman David Wright.  Beyond him, Puma assumes that New York is willing to listen on all of its other players.

While a Mets official told Puma that “it doesn’t make sense to trade” Davis right now, he said you still have to be willing to listen to offers.  The official backed up this reasoning by offering a hypothetical situation.

Say the Marlins decide to check in on Davis’s availability.  Rather than quickly turn Miami away with a closed-for-business attitude, the official says the Mets could counter with “OK, give us Mike Stanton to play right field”.

Puma made it clear that this trade isn’t happening and hasn’t even been proposed.  The statement is more to give readers the mindset of the Mets front office.  While they may be willing to listen to offers for their top young talent, it will cost a hefty price to pry said players away from New York.

Alderson was much more vague with his comments, stating that the Mets have “over the last several days considered trades” that would make them better in the short and long term.  Moving forward, Alderson indicated that the club will “continue to balance the short term with the long term”.  While New York could “make more than one trade”, Alderson admits that it’s very possible the Mets “won’t make another trade”.
