2012 MLB Free Agents: Carlos Beltran Rumors

facebooktwitterreddit

The free agent market for outfielders continues to fall into place, as Michael Cuddyer was the latest player to come of the board.  After reaching a three-year deal with Cuddyer, the Colorado Rockies took themselves off the list of potential suitors for outfielder Carlos Beltran.  The Blue Jays and Cardinals remain as the two known suitors for Beltran, while a pair of mystery clubs apparently remain in the hunt as well.

Yesterday, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reported that Beltran has at least one offer of $10 million per year on the table.  Beltran is known to be seeking a multi-year deal this winter, but it’s unknown how long of a contract teams are willing to offer the veteran.

Beltran is 34-years-old and will turn 35 early in the 2012 season.  Cuddyer was able to draw a three-year deal with an annual salary north of $10 million and doesn’t boast the career numbers of Beltran.  But, Cuddyer is two years younger than Beltran, and many wonder what Carlos has remaining in the tank.  Our own Mickey Brignall took a look at exactly this question yesterday.

Even though they have a plethora of outfielders on their roster, the Blue Jays have been listed as one of Beltran’s known suitors.  The other is the Cardinals.

After missing out on Albert Pujols, St. Louis said it would look to reallocate its money this winter.  With few impact bats remaining, St. Louis already elected to go with Rafael Furcal over Jimmy Rollins at short, the Cardinals may have to target Beltran if they truly want to recoup some offense this winter.

The mysterious teams have remained just that, but we all know how quickly that can change this time of year.
