Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington shared several news items of interest with reporters yesterday. Cherington’s list of topics discussed included Jacoby Ellsbury’s contract status, Boston’s pursuit of pitching and Carl Crawford’s offseason surgery.
Jacoby Ellsbury and the Red Sox were able to avoid arbitration yesterday, as the two sides agreed to a one-year, $8.05 million contract. While rumors have floated recently regarding a possible multi-year extension, Cherington told reporters that he did not discuss a long-term deal with Ellsbury.
Cherington also noted that there is no new information to pass on about the Red Sox pursuit of pitching. Boston recently signed Vicente Padilla who joins other offseason additions Aaron Cook and Carlos Silva. This group of veterans as well as other in-house candidates is expected to compete for spots in the back end of the Red Sox rotation this spring.
Finally, Cherington shared bad news for Red Sox fans regarding one of the club’s highest paid players. Cherington confirmed that Carl Crawford underwent surgery on his left wrist this offseason, and that the outfielder may not be ready for Opening Day 2012.
