The Colorado Rockies have ensured they will have their closer in place for at least the next two seasons.  Colorado agreed to pick up Rafael Betancourt’s 2013 option worth $4.25 million and add another club option for the same amount for 2014.

Entering the offseason, the Rockies projected closer for 2012 was Huston Street.  Colorado felt comfortable shopping and ultimately trading Street because they knew they had Betancourt in their back pocket.

The 36-year-old right-hander has been one of the game’s most consistent relievers since joining the majors in 2003.  Over his three seasons with the Rockies Betancourt has maintained an ERA of 3.00 to go with his 0.907 WHIP over 150 innings pitched.

Following Street’s injury last season Betancourt stepped into the Rockies closer role and performed well, converting eight of his nine save opportunities.  For the year Betancourt posted a 2.89 ERA and miniscule 0.866 WHIP over his 62 1/3 IP.  Betancourt also managed extremely impressive SO/9 (10.5) and BB/9 (1.2) numbers.
