Red Sox Rumors: Marco Scutaro Trade Talks, Gavin Floyd and Payroll

facebooktwitterreddit

The Boston Red Sox have made it clear that they will not be making any major additions this winter without first shedding payroll.  It looked as if the Red Sox were on the verge of doing just that yesterday, as a trade was discussed between Boston and the Colorado Rockies.  Rob Bradford of WEEI.com offers the latest on the Marco Scutaro talks and what the Red Sox would do with the money they’d add.

Yesterday afternoon it was reported that the Rockies were close to a deal that would have sent Marco Scutaro to Colorado.  These talks later fizzled, as Troy Renck of the Denver Post reported the Red Sox were reluctant to trade Scutaro without having a known replacement waiting in the wings.

Bradford added last night that nothing was imminent regarding a Scutaro trade.  Renck ended his reporting by saying that it now appears a trade “won’t happen”, but you never know when something will rekindle this time of year.

While a Scutaro deal may not be on the horizon, the discussions do seem to indicate that the Red Sox are trying to move salary.  Bradford lists several possible motivations for Boston to do so including free agent Cody Ross and Chicago White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd.  The Red Sox have also been tied to veteran starter Roy Oswalt this winter.

While all of these players may be on the Red Sox radar, Bradford notes that an acquisition involving any of those listed above is said to be impossible unless a trade was first made to offer budgetary relief.
