MLB Free Agents: Seattle Mariners Sign Kevin Millwood

It’s being reported that the Seattle Mariners and veteran starting pitcher Kevin Millwood have reached a one-year agreement.  Exact terms of the contract have yet to be released, though Millwood is reportedly receiving a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training.

While last weekend’s Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero swap provided the Mariners with much needed offense, it also left a hole in their starting rotation.  Seattle plans on throwing Millwood into the mix of those competing for rotation spots.

Millwood was only able to secure a minor league deal last offseason as well, though he wasn’t able to crack the major league roster with his first two clubs.  After opting out of deals with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, Millwood eventually landed with the Colorado Rockies.

With the Rockies, Millwood posted an ERA and WHIP of 3.98 and 1.215 over his 54 1/3 innings pitched.  The 37-year-old was able to maintain a S0/9 of 6.0 to go with his BB/9 of 1.3.

Prior to 2011, Millwood had logged at least 141 innings pitched per year since his first full season with the Atlanta Braves in 1998.  The right-hander has a career ERA and WHIP of 4.10 and 1.324 over his 15 seasons in the bigs.
