Yoenis Cespedes Rumors: Tigers and Orioles Updates

Yoennis Cespedes is now officially a free agent, and a bidding war for the Cuban native is expected to ensue.  While multiple teams have been linked to Cespedes this offseason, news came out yesterday regarding two of Yoennis’s potential suitors; the Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers.

Entering the week the Tigers were considered to be one of the frontrunners in the race for Cespedes.  The team then signed Prince Fielder to a mega-deal, and many naturally assumed this would take them out of the hunt for Cespedes.

While this may ultimately be the case, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski wasn’t slamming any doors.  When askedwhether or not his club was out of the running for Cespedes, Dombrowski responded “I don’t want to say that”.  Dombrowski added that Detroit is “most likely” out of the race for Cespedes, but also added an elusive “you can never tell”.

Meanwhile, Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reported yesterday that the Orioles remain interested in Cespedes.  Encina noted that Baltimore has not been scared off by Cespedes’s poor showing in the Dominican Winter League, and that the club is expected to watch Yoennis when he plays in the Caribbean Series next week in the DR.

As easy as it is to count the Orioles out on big-name free agents, the club has been active on the international front this offseason.  Cespedes himself also said that the Orioles were one of six clubs that have showed “more interest” in him this offseason.
