Joe Maddon, Tampa Bay Rays Nearing Three-Year Extension
By Editorial Staff
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times is reporting that the Rays and current manager Joe Maddon are nearing a contract extension. Maddon’s extension is for three years and will likely be completed and announced after the skipper returns from Europe this week.
Maddon took over the Rays before the 2006 season. That year and the next the then Devil Rays were only able to notch a total of 127 victories. The Devil Rays then became the Rays, changed their look and haven’t looked back since.
Since 2008, Maddon and the Rays have maintained a winning percentage of .568. Tampa Bay made its first playoff and World Series appearance in 2008, and has since returned to the postseason twice. Maddon has collected a pair of AL Manager of the Year awards (2008, 2011) and is considered one of baseball’s best skippers.
