Zack Greinke Open to Contract Extension with Brewers

Zack Greinke is currently acting without representation, as the right-hander decided to part ways with CAA Sports last year.  Greinke also finds himself in the final year of his contract.  Agent or no agent, Greinke told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that he’s willing to discuss a contract extension with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Greinke is set to enter the final season of the four-year, $38 million deal he signed with the Kansas City Royals in January of 2009.  Though he’s dropped off a bit since his Cy Young Award-winning campaign of that same year, Greinke, 28, is primed to become one of the more attractive free agent options next offseason.

But, even as he’s set to enter another month agent-less, it’s no guarantee that Greinke hits the open market.  When McCalvy asked Greinke about a possible extension with the Brewers, Greinke said it was something that he’ll “talk to them about”.

Following the trade that sent Greinke from Kansas City to Milwaukee in December of 2010, the right-hander decided to part ways with his agency company.  At this point, as Greinke puts it, he’s the one “in charge”.

Greinke admitted that he’s not planning on being his own agent, but that he does “like the business of baseball”.  Greinke added that it’s an “exciting” process and that he likes “being able to know what’s going on behind the scenes”.

I’m sure several agents are doing everything they can to get in on Greinke’s potential deal.  For now, though, Greinke is content running the show himself.
