Yankees Rumors: New York in “Serious Talks” with Bill Hall

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported yesterday that the New York Yankees are engaging in “serious talks” with free agent Bill Hall.  Andy Martino of New York Daily News later confirmed that the Yankees are discussing a deal with Hall, though nothing is imminent as he is still considering a “couple of teams”.

Rosenthal noted that Hall could play a role in New York similar to the one he filled during the 2010 season with the Red Sox.  That year Hall hit at a clip of .247/.316/.456 while manning every position other than first base and catcher.

This earned Hall a $3 million deal with the Houston Astros, who tried to make the 32-year-old their regular second baseman.  The experiment failed, as Hall was only able to post an OPS of .612 over his 46 games with the Astros, and Houston ultimately released him.

Hall was picked up by the San Francisco Giants, but he only appeared in 16 games due to ineffectiveness and injury.  Hall’s numbers actually declined by the Bay, as he only managed a line of .158/.220/.211 over his 41 plate appearances with the Giants.

At this point New York is looking to reinforce its bench.  After last year’s performance, Hall will likely ink a minor league deal this winter with an invite to spring training.
