Roy Oswalt Rumors: Rangers Unlikely to Sign Oswalt

by Rumors

Now that Edwin Jackson has signed with the Washington Nationals, all eyes are on free agent starter Roy Oswalt.  The market for Oswalt has reportedly narrowed of late, with the Boston Red Sox saying that they are unlikely to make any major additions before Spring Training.  It’s been reported that the right-hander is most interested in joining the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.  However, while Oswalt may have interest in the Rangers, it does not appear that Texas will be signing the veteran this winter.

A baseball source told Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the Rangers are not likely to sign Oswalt.  The 34-year-old told reams earlier this week that he was not interested in pitching in relief, and a source told Wilson that the Rangers do not want to move Matt Harrisonout of their starting rotation to make room of Oswalt.

Both the Cardinals and Rangers would have to move some pieces around to facilitate the addition of Oswalt, but it had been speculated that each club was flexible if it mean acquiring the three-time All-Star.  The Rangers have already added Yu Darvish and Neftali Feliz to the starting rotation, and it appears they are confident heading into the season with their current mix of starters.

This news would seem to make the Cardinals the favorites to ultimately land Oswalt, though as we saw with the Nationals and Jackson yesterday, you never know what is going to happen this time of year.
