Manny Ramirez Rumors: A’s, Manny Nearing Deal

With a limited number of suitors, it was determined earlier this week that free agent Manny Ramirez was likely to eventually ink a deal with the Oakland A’s.  According to Friday’s report from the Associated Press, Ramirez is still expected to end up in Oakland and could sign with the A’s in the next couple of days.

The reported indicated that Ramirez is likely to receive a contract slightly over the league minimum of $480,000.  Most assumed the slugger would only fetch a minor league deal this offseason with an invite to Spring Training.

Though he’s facing a 50-game suspension for his second failed performance-enhancing drug test, Ramirez will be able to participate in Spring Training with whichever team he signs with.  Manny will then be able to attend extended Spring Training and work out with minor and major league teams during his 50-game ban granted he is off the field before gates open.

Interest in Ramirez has been sparse this offseason, and it appeared that Manny would be deciding between a trio of clubs as February began.  However, two of the three teams reportedly made the decision for Ramirez.  The Orioles and Blue Jays, two of the initial teams in on Manny this winter, distanced themselves from the veteran in recent weeks.  This left the A’s as Manny’s last suitor standing.
